Blue unit is one of the oldest unit of NITOR. This unit was established in 1973 at the beginning of the inception of this hospital headed by Prof. RJ. Garst. Since then Blue unit-1 has a vital role in both patient care and academic affairs. Blue unit has rich history of association with great names of orthopaedic surgeons in Bangladesh, which was headed by Prof. Salek Talukder, Our Ex. Honorable health minister Prof. A.F.M Ruhal Haque, followed by Prof. M.A. Hannan, Prof. A.K.M Eshaque. On June 2003, Prof. Kh. A.A. Rizvi took charge of Blue unit which was then known as Arthroplasty unit. In the year of 2007, there was a change from 9 units to 12 units and Prof. Kh. A.A. Rizvi continued as unit chief of Blue unit 1&2 then Prof. Hamidul Haque Khandaker was unit chief of Blue unit 1&2 till 2013. From 2015 to 2024 Prof. Dr. Md. Wahidur Rahman was unit chief of this unit.From August 2024 Dr. Wakil Ahmed ( Associate Professor) took charge of Blue unit-I and this unit is also known as Arthroplasty unit. Under his guidance Blue unit-I perform all Arthroscopic knee surgery, Total Hip, Total Knee and Revision Arthroplasty, Ilizarov and deformity correction, Spine surgery, in addition to other traumatic and orthopaedic diseases.
Blue unit-I is trying to increase patient satisfaction by providing highest level of quality service and improving rapport between doctors and patients. Future plan of this unit includes research activities and performing total elbow and shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Wakil Ahmed ( Associate Professor) and his team is strongly dedicated to this unit.
