Department of Anaesthesiology

Department of   Anaesthesia and ICU  is  regarded as one of the most vital department from inauguration of  National Institute of  Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), Dhaka.

The Department was started by Miss Harry Macnab in 1972 with few supporting staff. Professor Dr.Noor Jahan Khanam took charge on 14.04.1979 as first head of the department. Now 32 experienced, dedicated anaesthesiologists and intensivists perfrom their duties in 23 operation theatres (OT) including 20 bedded ICU. In first ten (10) months of 2023, total 22040 anaesthesia was given. Among them, 14910 was Subarachnoid Block (SAB), 4596 was Brachial Plexus Block (BB) and 834 was General Anaesthesia(GA).

At present Anaesthesia and ICU department provides following services and committed to serve NITOR with remarkable skill with quality anaesthesia and critical care service provider of the country-

1. Preoperative assessment and optimization.
2. Pre-emptive analgesia.
3. Intra-operative safe anaesthesia and analgesia.
4. Post-operative anesthesia care.
5. Perioperative critical care management and ICU support.
6. USG guided regional and peripheral nerve block.
7. A full-fledged pain clinic will be started in near future but now interventional pain medicine is practiced in small range.

Anaesthesia and ICU department of NITOR wants to play it’s role actively in making skilled orthopaedic surgeons of Bangladesh through their teamwork.
